In this 8-week online course, participants will study the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice, apply the Mathematical Practices in their classroom, and share their experiences by posting brief reflections online. The authentic classroom application of the Mathematical Practices is a key component of this class; thus, if your curriculum over the course of the 8 weeks will not offer regular opportunities to practice math strategies in your classroom, we recommend that you opt to take this class at another time.
For this class we will use selections from Common Core Mathematics in a PLC at Work (either the K-2 or 3-5 edition) and the following resources:
- Putting the Practices into Practice handout (which you should have received from someone in your district)
- Inside Mathematics videos (http://www.insidemathematics.org/index.php/mathematical-practice-standards)
The course will be partitioned into four 2-week cycles. Each cycle will focus on two Mathematical Practices. In each 2-week cycle, participants will:
- STUDY the assigned texts and videos.
- PLAN for application in the classroom.
- SHARE a plan with the cohort.
- APPLY math practices in the classroom.
- REFLECT on results with the cohort.
- INTERACT by commenting on a cohort member’s post.
There is a tab at the top of the blog for each two-week chunk of the class. I will send you reminder emails throughout the course with links to the appropriate page, but you are welcome to visit these pages ahead of time and work ahead if you'd like.
