Mathematical Practice 1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
Mathematical Practice 6: Attend to precision
STUDY and PLAN for Application
In this cycle, we will study Mathematical Practices 1 & 6. As you learn about MP1 & MP6 through the readings and videos, think about how you are already using these practices in your classroom and how you might take these practices further.
(1) Read Common Core Mathematics in a PLC at Work
- K-2: p. 25-31,47-51
- 3-5: p. 25-32, 48-51
- 6-8: p. 29-40
- High School: p. 27-34
(2) Read Putting the Practices into Practice handout (p. 1-3 and 16-18)
(3) For each practice, select and view one Inside Mathematics video:.

SHARE Your Plan (Post by end of Week 1)
How will you incorporate MP1 and MP6 into your instruction? Plan one or more activities to put these practices into practice.
- Please include the context (math content, grade level, placement in the unit, etc.) in your post.
- Briefly describe your lesson plan and how it incorporates MP1 and MP6.
- What teacher actions develop these Math Practices?
- What evidence will show that students are demonstrating these Math Practices?
APPLY
Put your plan into action in your classroom.
REFLECT (Post by end of Week 2 by replying to your original “Plan” post)
How did it go? Reflecting on the practices you implemented, what successes, challenges, and/or insights did you and your students encounter? What might you do differently next time?
INTERACT (by the end of Week 2)
Over the course of these two weeks, don’t forget to respond to another participant’s plan or reflection.
